Digital Finesse

The digital circuitry of the OriGen+ consists of a VIA VT1736 USB 2.0 High Speed 480Mbps audio controller and a Cirrus Logic CS4392 stereo D/A converter. This capable combination provides asynchronous decoding and conversion of PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz as well as native and DoP support for DSD64 (2.8MHz) audio. Advanced audio stream interface support includes both ASIO and WASAPI Push/Event output modes. Selectable USB or Optical S/PDIF digital input for flexible source connection.

Analog Brawn

The analog section of the OriGen+ provides switchable line-level or headphone output, using JRC NJM4556 op amps with two output gain levels of 5.6Vrms and 1.7Vrms. The selectable gain design provides excellent drive capability into any downstream amplifiers with enhanced signal strength, low noise, and low interference. The headphone outputs are similarly powerful, with only 0.5 Ohm output impedance and able to drive 16-600 Ohm headphones.

Solid Construction

Starting with a steel tub chassis, the OriGen+ is capped with an anodized aluminum top plate and finished with a solid machined aluminum volume knob. The TOCOS sealed potentiometer used for volume control offers long operating life and a smooth weighted feel. The all-metal construction makes the OriGen+ exceptionally durable and helps shield against unwanted interference.

Hearing is believing, try the OriGen+ risk free with your computer and your music library. The OriGen+ is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, as well as tablets and mobile devices that have USB-OTG audio capability. If you are not absolutely delighted with the OriGen+’s performance, simply return it for a refund.

Micca OriGen+ does not install, not recognized by computer

A small batch of Micca OriGen+ was shipped with defective USB cables. If your Micca OriGen+ does not install correctly or is not detected by the computer this may be caused by a defective USB cable.

The defective USB cable will provide power to the OriGen but will not pass data correctly. When this occurs, the power light on the OriGen+ will turn on in red color instead of blue. When this happens, try a different USB cable to see if this resolves the issue.

If the USB cable you received with the OriGen+ is defective, please contact our support team at support@miccatorn.com to receive a replacement USB cable.

Micca OriGen Driver Install – Windows 10 Anniversary Update

With the release of Windows 10 Anniversary Update in August 2016, the driver installation sequence has changed in a way that was not anticipated in the Micca OriGen driver package. While we work on a driver package update, please observe the following instructions when installing the driver on Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update:

  1. Be sure the OriGen is not connected to the computer.
  2. Disable windows digital driver signature, use the instructions below:
  3. Save all your work and close all programs. If the computer uses BitLocker drive encryption, temporarily suspend it – Here’s How Open Control Panel, select System and Security and then select BitLocker Drive Encryption. Click on Suspend Protection. You can resume protection after the driver installation is complete.
  4. Click the Start menu and select the Settings icon.
  5. Click Update and Security, then select Recovery. Under Advanced Startup, click Restart now. The computer will reboot.
  6. Click Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then click Startup Settings, and click on Restart. The computer will reboot again.
  7. On the Startup Settings screen press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement. The computer will reboot for a third time
  8. Once the computer finishes rebooting, run the OriGen+ driver installation, but on the final screen when it prompts to restart the computer, click No, I will restart my computer later and click Finish.
  9. At this time, connect the OriGen and turn it on. A windows driver install dialog box will pop up, leave this open.
  10. Click on the Start menu and type in “Device Manager” and press enter..
  11. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers group, there should be a VIA USB Device listed with a triangle exclamation mark.
  12. Right click on the VIA USB Device and select Properties, the pop up box will show the error “Driver is not intended for this platform”.
  13. Click on Update Driver, then click on Browse my computer for driver software. Click on Browse and navigate to where you have downloaded and unpacked the OriGen driver, then the sub folders \VIAUDUSB\DRIVER\VISTA64. Click Next when ready. The driver will be installed correctly.
  14. Reboot the computer one final time to complete the install. Digital driver signature will be re-enabled automatically.

The last few steps should look similar to the screen shot below:

Micca OriGen/OriGen+ Does Not Support DTS or Dolby AC3 Signal

micca-origen-dts-ac3-disableThe Micca OriGen/OriGen+ supports PCM or DSD audio decoding over USB. It does not support decoding of DTS or Dolby AC3 audio streams. Furthermore, it is limited to decoding PCM signals over the optical input since DSD cannot be transmitted over an optical connection due to bandwidth limitations.

When configuring the OriGen/OriGen+ device properties, be sure that “DTS” and “Dolby Digital” checkboxes are unchecked. Similarly, if you are connecting the OriGen/OriGen+ to the optical output on your computer, check that the device properties for the optical output also has the “DTS” and “Dolby Digital” checkboxes blank. This ensures that the computer will perform decoding of DTS and Dolby signals, and output the audio in PCM format.

Micca OriGen no signal from optical S/PDIF output

The OriGen’s 3.5mm jack also doubles as a optical mini output jack. When it is working, the jack will glow red indicating that a signal is present. While this output will work for most situations, there are three known limitation with the optical S/PDIF output where it will not produce any output:

  • If the PCM signal is 32-bit 192kHz as this exceeds optical specifications. The limit is 24-bit 192kHz.
  • If the output mode is ASIO. The VIA USB chip only supports S/PDIF output when the data stream is Direct Sound or WASAPI.
  • When used with certain Android phones over USB OTG, since certain Android implementations lack the necessary endpoint support for S/PDIF output.
